The teaching of Biology at Université Laval dates back to 1920 when the University created the École Supérieure de chimie which had the responsibility of teaching fundamental sciences, including Biology. The current Department of Biology was founded in 1940 and initially comprised 7 professors. This original multidisciplinary team, under the direction of Prof. Jean-Louis Tremblay, taught theoretical and practical courses on campus during the academic year and at the Station biologique du Saint-Laurent, situated in Grande-Rivière on the Baie des Chaleurs, during the summer.
Today, the Department of Biology comprises 26 professors that are involved in 5 research centers; the Centre d'études nordiques (CEN), the Centre Interuniversitaire de recherche sur le saumon Atlantique (CIRSA), the Laboratoire régional des sciences aquatiques (LARSA), the Centre d'étude de la forêt (CEF) and the Groupe inter-institutionnel de recherches océanographiques du Québec (Québec-Océan previously GIROQ). Seven professors in the Department are holders of prestigious research chairs. With approximately 275 B.Sc. students and 100 graduate students at the M.Sc. and Ph.D. levels enrolled annually, the Department of Biology is an exceptional center of learning and research in fields as diversified as molecular biology, animal physiology, animal ecology, marine ecology, limnology, plant biology and ecology, and environmental studies and conservation. The Department of Biology's web page provides a wealth of information concerning our teaching and research programs as well as news of current activities and developments in the Department.
