Research programs :

The adaptive significance and evolution of life-histories in fishes are the key research themes of Julian Dodson's laboratory. To this end, our research program includes projects on the mechanisms of population differentiation, including larval retention in population-specific nursery areas and the growth, survival and recruitment of the early life-history stages of fishes, and the environmental and genetic control of alternative reproductive strategies and tactics. Most research efforts of the laboratory are dedicated to the study of the rainbow smelt, Atlantic salmon and brook charr. Research findings are of fundamental importance as well as providing the knowledge needed for the wise management of these resources. This work is carried out in collaboration with the Québec Society of wildlife and parks and the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans and is part of the research programs of CIRSA and Québec-Océan.

Presently, 3 principal research themes are under study in my laboratory:

  • The evolutionary ecology of the sympatric populations of rainbow smelt.
  • The evolution of alternative reproductive strategies in Atlantic salmon and brook charr.
  • Phylogeography of fishes and crustaceans.
